Topic: Negative Numbers

Level: Secondary 1 Normal Academic

Blog Title: Look at the Sky (http://bluebluesky2007.blogspot.com)

Purpose

  • To reinforce the concept of negative numbers.
  • To apply the concepts to real life examples.

Description of Activity:

  • Students are to read the instructions on the blog and follow through the procedures stated to complete the activity.
  • They will print out the worksheet from the hyperlink and answer the questions on the worksheet.
  • Students are to access the relevant website put up on the blog in order to complete the worksheet.
  • Finally, students will reflect on what they have learnt at the last part of the blog.

How the blog is used:

  • Curriculum: The objectives of the activity are stated at the start of the blog.
    Scenerio: A detailed description of the activity is given.
  • Task assignment: Instructions for carrying out the activity are stated.
    Resource: The URL of a website on weather forecast. Students are to access the website for information.
  • Assessment: A table showing the criteria of assessing the performance of students.
  • Checklist: Consists of questions to prompt students to reflect on what they have learnt.

I agree that pupils are derailed when they are given negative numbers. I like this Webquest format.

Have to check the URL to the weather forecast.

Alternatively, after assigning the 'country' to the pupils, can give them some websites where they can search for information.

PS: Pupils should be able to carry out internet search to identify one weather website.

By looking at the temperatures of the countries assigned, pupils have an idea of the authentic use of positive and negative numbers.

On the same note, we can also get pupils to suggest "where else" can they find the use of positive and negative numbers.

Through the comments feature, pupils can describe where negative numbers can be found. Examples on the use of negative numbers: The depth that the submarine sinks into the sea, the temperature of ice when salt is added, stock market values, etc.
