Session 3: Sharing by Group G

Topic: Scales

Level: Secondary 2 Express

Blog Title: Proportion in Disguise (http://scalemap.blogspot.com)

Purpose:

At the end of the activity, not only students are able to apply the concept of proportion to solve problems arising out of maps and scales, this is a good opportunity for them to experience real life application.

Description of Activity:

  • This activity is to be carried out in 1 lesson.
  • Students make use of the information available on the web to apply what they have learnt in class on Scales and Maps.

How the blog is used:

  • Students go to http://www.streetdirectory.com and click Driving Directions.
  • Under the Starting Address, enter their home address or postal code.
  • Under the End button, enter Singapore Zoo.
  • Click Shortest Distance under Travel Via.
  • Record the scale of the map displayed; calculate the corresponding route distance on the map. Also calculate the average speed traveled.
  • A chance for them to have an idea how far they are away from the Zoo.

A good link between blog and website. Will students be given certain time constraint to complete the activity ?

I like this activity because I always feel that pupils will appreciate Maths more if you can link it to real world. I will most probably refer to your URL for ideas.

Looks like this blog is used as a webpage.

The activity provides pupils a realistic sense of distance - the shortest distances between 2 places and the actual distance travelled.

Apart from using the blog an informative page (with hyperlinks available to aid them to carry out the activity), one way to use it - could be a trigger, before the class attempt the activity. It could be a question, to ask pupils to provide their views.

For instance, provide a sketch of the Singapore map - join the Changi airport to the zoo and indicate. Ask pupils the question:
"Yao Yao, the panda has finally arrived! It is going to travel 32 km from the Changi airport to the zoo (see diagram). Comment on sentence." Pupils can give their view points and explanations via the blog.

This could give them a sense of actual distance they are going to talk about in the class activity.
