Topic: Solution of simultaneous linear equations involving 2 unknowns
Level: Secondary 2 Special/Express
Blog Title: Simultaneous Linear Equations (S2simult-eqns.blogspot.com [not active yet])
Purpose: To allow students to consolidate their learning and make connections to the real world
Description of Activity:
- Students tap on resources like news articles and websites to look for interesting/suitable materials.
- They identify possible variables and come up with a pair of simultaneous equations from the materials.
- They post their problems in the teachers' blog.
- Students view other groups' posts and try to solve the equations. They are also encouraged to give constructive comments on the questions crafted.
How the blog is used:
Part I:
- Objective of activity
- Task to be completed
- Example
- Recommended resources
Part II:
- View other groups' posts and solve the problems
- Give comments

a very detailed and well-planned lesson plan. objectives clearly stated. Gd!
creative use of newspaper articles and internet resources
Will it be easy to come up with the 2 equations??
Good idea. It's difficult to link some math topic to real world. But if we can do so, it's more meaningful for students to learn.
Good way of getting students to craft their own questions.
Hi,
Perhaps you can give your students some clues on what situations to look out for in order to create simultaneous equations from them.
Good idea.
Students will learn to appreciate how the topic relates to real life situations.
However, techniques on solving the equations are not quite addressed by the blog.
another tip for us to conduct similiar lesson
What if students cannot find any real life examples? Any hints to help them to start off?
Very clear lesson plan with very specific objectives.
Ingenious way of engage learning
Hi!
Sounds interesting. The students will be excited in earning some money.
Can the students create posts in order to submit their business proposals?
It's an interesting idea of getting pupils to look for articles where they could identify 2 variables and hence come up with 2 equations is interesting... on the other hand, could be challenging, too - as it's a pretty new way to connect simultaneous equations to authentic situations.
Would like to suggest to model this when the topic is introduced:
- Provide an example, to illustrate how to surface the variable & hence form the 2 equations.
- Post 2-3 similar situation (or hyperlinks to the source article) in the blog. Get pupils to propose by entering the variables & equations through comments.
Subsequently, as a task, pupils can post hyperlink with the article they've sourced (from the internet) and the equations connecting the variables.
